Carbon dioxide is a scent that attracts mosquitos. When we exhale that odor is released and mosquitoes quickly get a visual on their target.  Thermal signals such as body heat help them find the perfect landing spot.  So, using the right repellent can keep you off the mosquito’s radar all summer long.

How it Works!

Most repellents don’t kill mosquitoes.  They keep mosquitoes from finding and landing on treated surfaces.  Repellents mask the odors that attract them.  Many repellents such as DEET confuse their odor receptors.  aking it harder for mosquitos to find a place on us to feed.

What to Look For When Buying Repellents

When buying a repellent keep these ingredients in mind.

DEET:  has been proven to work by confusing the mosquito’s odor receptors, and is regarded by many as the most effective mosquito repellent. DEET is one of the best mosquito repellents and the EPA states that normal use of DEET does not present a health concern to the general population, including children.

Picardian:  Still not sure about DEET? Try Picaridin. This repellent ingredient is considered slightly safer than DEET. It is a chemical mosquito repellent but the fact is it has fewer reported side effects.  This repellent adds protection up to 8 hrs. and doesn’t have an unpleasant odor.

Essential oils: Essential oils do provide some protection from mosquitoes, but their repellent properties generally last for a maximum of 2-4 hours. Requiring frequent re-application and, taking into consideration the fact that even natural products like these can cause skin irritation.
