Hardwood floors will give any room a beautiful touch.  What is the best way to clean them?  With all the different mixtures that can be use you’ll want to be sure to test an area first before applying to floors.  Follow these easy steps to bring your floors back to life and leaving them gorgeous and clean.

How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Water and wood don’t mix, so when you start to mop make sure its not soaping wet.  You don’t just want to let the water sit on your hardwood floors.    Begin by dusting or sweeping, then make a cleaning mixture using 4 cups warm water and a few drops of dish soap .Its important to check the floor warranty and make sure you are using the recommended product but soap & water is a safe solution.   Starting in small sections is best. Just make sure you dry them as you go.    Don’t use oils, waxes or furniture sprays. Oil leaves a residue, furniture spray creates a slippery surface and wax takes time to apply and makes re-coating difficult.

Removing Stains

If the stain is on the surface, your floor probably has a hard finish, such as urethane. If the finish stain has penetrated through to the wood, the floor probably has a soft oiled finish, common in older homes whose floors have not been refinished and resealed. For floors with a hard finish, wipe surface stains with a soft, clean cloth. Never use sandpaper, steel wool, or harsh chemicals because they can permanently damage the finish.  Soft oiled finishes may need staining, waxing and buffing after the spot has been removed.  Removing pet stains will require steel wool and floor wax. If the area is still dark apply bleach or vinegar and let it soak in for about an hour and then rinse with a damp cloth.

Removing Heel Marks:  Use fine steel wool to rub in floor wax.

Remove oil-based stains:  Rub the area with a soft cloth and dish detergent to break down the grease.  Rinse with clear water.  Keep children and pets out of the room until your done. Let the spot dry and then smooth it out with fine sand paper.

Remove watermarks or white stains: Rub the spot with steel wool and floor wax. If the stain goes deeper, lightly sand the floor and clean with fine steel wool and odorless mineral spirits.
