Its Ant season again!  When the weather warms up and there has been a warm rainy day, ants will decide its time to go indoors.  There are home remedies that you can try, but there are lots of other things you can do to keep ants out of your house.

What attracts ants?

Its very simple…food, water and shelter!  Kitchen and bathrooms are common places that you might see ants.  There are many types of ants and they’re not all attracted to the same thing.  In general ants are attracted to organic matter like something sweet.  That could mean kitchen scrapes or a small bit of honey left on your countertop or floor could bring them inside.

All it takes is one ant.  If you see an ant on your countertop and think its not a big of deal…think again.  That one ant will go back to the nest and tell all his buddies that he has found food and then you will start to see even more ants.  You’ve got to SQUISH It!  Otherwise the ant will leave a trail of pheromones to show another ants the food supply.    Ant colonies can grow rapidly so its important to keep them out of your home.

Keeping Ants Out of Your House

Eliminate the Food Supply

Ants need food and that is the main thing they are looking for.  Cookie crumbs, open containers and dirty floors is like an all you can eat buffet to an ant.  If you have a dirty house ants will multiple quickly to feast on that easily accessible food supply. So the answer is simple take away the food and the less ants you will see in your house.

Eliminate the Water Source

Moisture can be a problem too.  The reason you find ants in the bathroom is that they’re always looking for a water source and will stay close if they find one.  Don’t let water sit on countertops and floors.  Wipe it up quickly.

Seal up Entry Points

Ants are tiny so it doesn’t take large entry for them to get in.  Make sure you don’t have any open entries and its a good idea to caulk small crevices around doors and windows. Another way to keep them out of your house is to find the nest.   It isn’t easy but with a little patience you can find it.  Try leaving out something sweet and the ants will lead you to their nest.  Once you find the nest pour boiling water, borax acid or another ant killers onto the entire nest.

Cleanliness is Key

Keep dishes clean, countertops wiped down,  floors swept and mopped daily.  Use a vinegar water combo to wipe down counter tops.  Ants hate it so it will keep them away but not for long only 2 or 3 days.  Empty trash cans and especially when there is food scraps.  That will attract ants quickly.

Call In Professionals

Sometimes the best thing to do is call in a professional.  If you have a huge invasion it maybe hard for you to control it on your own.   An exterminator can find a nest inside your walls and are trained to deal with it.
